It's like deja vu all over again!

Hi

He was a friendly, familiar face on our television screens for almost 50 years before his retirement in 2014 and now – thanks to popular demand – he’s coming back.

The newest incarnation of the iconic face of fish fingers, Captain Birdseye himself, is set to return in a television advert that’s debuting on April 9th. And, naturally, the Internet is going pretty crazy for this retro revival.

This is just the latest in a line of retro-themed marketing campaigns that have been making a splash.

Cadbury’s are bringing back their infamous Milk Tray Man, Aldi’s latest TV ad sees the tongue-in-cheek return of the Cadbury’s drumming Gorilla, and Apple’s latest iPhone is a nod towards their earlier models.

It seems that we simply can’t get enough of blasts from the past.

The reason behind this is simple enough.

Nostalgia is comforting. It’s safe. It takes us back to happy times and makes us feel at ease.

Brands and businesses know this, and by bringing back famous characters or re-releasing “vintage” products they're giving their customers that nostalgic feeling. They’re taking them to a happy place, and it makes spending easy.

How could this work for you?

While you don’t have to bring back an old face to breathe new life into your marketing, you should definitely explore adding nostalgia into your marketing.

Think about what would be familiar for your customers.

What would take them back to “the good old days”?

What will tug on their heartstrings and make them feel an affinity with your brand?

By taking your customers back to a great place – reminding them of great experiences they’ve had with your business – you can really play on their sense of nostalgia, and transform your marketing.

It’s about positioning. It’s about changing expectations and appealing to your customers.

Nostalgia is a big trend right now. Why not try it out?

You might be surprised at where it takes you…

To your success
