Upsell lessons you can learn from Apple

Published: Fri, 09/18/15

Hi

Unless you’ve been living under a rock (with no access to the Internet!), it’s hard to escape the buzz surrounding Apple’s latest releases.

With 3D touch, 4K video, and – perhaps most importantly – faster Wi-Fi, the newly unveiled iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus certainly went down well with Apple fanboys and fangirls.

Not only did they show off two new phones, but the tech-giant unveiled a brand new iPad, TV box and new, designer straps for their smartwatch.

But what’s really amazing about Apple is that, no matter how many new models they release or updates they make, their loyal fans are ALWAYS looking to upgrade. They’ve got the upsell nailed, and their customers always want the next best thing.

In fact, experts predicted this week that Apple will sell more than 10 MILLION iPhone 6s and iPhone 6S Plus phones is one weekend.

Now, while we can all dream of having 10 million people desperate to pre-order our latest products, this story did get me thinking about what we can learn from Apple. Why is it that so many people – with perfectly good Apple products – buy new ones every time they’re released?

So here, are some things you can learn from Apple to help you nail your next product upsell:

  1. Build a buzz - Apple does this brilliantly. Before any big launch, they always drop hints about what’s to come from them next. Tech blogs post ‘leaked’ images, rumours crop up everywhere, and Apple fans generally get really excited by all of this. Post teasers on your social media accounts, mention upcoming launches to your customers in passing; do anything you can to create an Apple-like buzz.
  2. Listen to your customers – Another thing Apple does really well with their upsells, is that they listen to their customers. You want new emojis? You get them with the new updates. Want a better front camera to take selfies? They’ll sort it. Desperate for a pink iPhone? It’s coming.  Listen to customer feedback, and offer them an upsell that meets their needs.
  3. Offer complementing products. If you buy an iPhone, chances are you’ll get a Macbook, iPod, iPad and iWatch too. Why? Because they all work harmoniously together. Have you got any complementing products you can offer as a cross-sell to make your customers as loyal as Apple’s?
