Hi
If you have been reading my emails for any length of time you will know that I am a firm believer that our taxation and welfare systems are broken and that fundamental reform is needed.
A major contributing factor for this is unecessary and wasteful spending by Government on benefits and social
care. There is far too much spending in areas for which taxpayers shouldn't be responsible such as early years child care.
The other factor which I've highlighted previously is that compared with our European counterparts UK taxpayers pay too little tax for the level of Government services we expect. We want to have our cake and eat it. We aspire to enjoy low tax levels like those in the
Anglosphere countries – places like the US, Australia, and Canada – while expecting high-quality public services like those seen in Northern Europe. But we can’t have both.
Look at the numbers. Britain’s tax revenue stands at 33.5% of GDP – more aligned with countries like Canada (33.2%) than with Northern European nations. Compare this with Germany at 39.5%, Scandinavia averaging 43.7%, and
France at a hefty 45.1%.
But that is about to change.
Despite assurances to the contrary, the Chancellor will have no option but to increase taxation in the forthcoming budget. We've done the research to distill what changes we may be in for which you can find in the attached paper
Autumn 2025 Budget Tax Impact Report.
Grab a coffee and take a few minutes to read this report; while we can all expect to be paying more tax in future no-one should be paying more than they need to and there may be actions you can take to mitigate the amount of tax you will be paying.
