Steven Bartlett you will probably have heard of from the television series Dragons’ Den as one of the dragons who invests in early-stage businesses.

I was unsure what to expect from a young entrepreneur who made his millions in social media but was royally rewarded once I had got used to the liberal use of expletives.

Bartlett is honest and forthright and describes himself as a 28 year old black kid from a bankrupt family who dropped out of university, but this isn’t an autobiography or the story of his marketing agency Social Chain. 

Instead, it is what he describes as ‘unexpected truths about fulfilment, love and success’ with chapters on how to take responsibility, locus of control and my favourite ‘How to become the best in the world at something while being the best in the world at nothing.

In this chapter he asserts that businesses are multi-faceted and success doesn't depend on mastering just one skill. He says: “This means that to become the best in your industry you do not need to become the best at anyone aspect, you just need to be very good at a variety of complementary skills - skills that your industry requires for personal success,” what he calls your skill stack.

It would be easy to cite other examples that Bartlett gives about his unexpected truths, but that would diminish a book that should really be essential reading for any entrepreneurial business owner for in truth the whole exceeds the sum of the parts.
