When I am on coaching calls at this time of year, there are five questions I ask my clients as we reflect on the year that is about to end and look forward to the year to come. These are:
- Imagine it’s a year from now - what does success look like?
- What does success mean to you and how has it positively impacted your life and your business?
- Looking at where you are today, what are the steps you will take to achieve your goals in 2022?
- What might potentially get in your way and prevent you from being successful next year?
- What can you do handle each scenario that might arise?
Having a clear vision of what success looks like is empowering. It enables you to set goals and your strategic priorities. In Built to Last, Jim Collins called them your big hairy audacious goals (BHAGs). They allow you to say ‘no’ to the things that
don’t move you towards your vison of success.
If you are like most people, you waste valuable time on activities that keep you where you are now rather than advancing.
Start the new year with a gift to yourself: stop wasting time on unproductive actions.
Write down the answers to these questions in your journal; the act of writing them will help make them happen. Refer to them regularly to keep on track. Share them with your coach and ask to be kept accountable.
